FAMOUS REVOLUTIONARY WOMEN

DOLORES IBARRURI OR ELSE..LA PASIONARIA..

Dolores Ibarruri known as La Pasionaria was born in a family of miners. She was the ninth from the eleven children of her family and at the age of 15 she had to leave school and support financially her family. She got married a miner and syndicalist who was imprisoned because he led a strike.Influenced by Marx's ideas,Dolores joined the Communist Party.Having been elected to the Provincial Committee of the Basque Communist Party in 1920 and in1930 to the Central Committee of the Spanish Communist Party she became a local political and fighting figure and used her position to improve the rights and the position of women in spanish society. The secret name La Pasionaria she used in the first articles she wrote in the local newspaper El Minero Vizcaino. In September 1931 Ibarruri was arrested for hiding a communist comrade from the civil guard.Even though she was set free in January 1932 she was re-arrested and held in prison until January 1933.Dolores was elected to the Spanish Parliament in 1936 and on 18 June 1936 she ended a radio speech with the words "The fascists shall not pass!No Pasaran!"This phrase eventually became the battle cry for the Republican Army. In another speech she declared at a meeting for women: "It is better to be the widows of heroes than the wives of cowards!".The win of fascist Franco in 1939 led her to her exile from Spain but nothing could stop her from being elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Spain in 1944.Only after Franco's death Dolores returned to Spain having been established in Spanish's minds as a figure that defended the rigths of people and fought those who humiliated people's lives.
